Where is the building?

The former District Memorial Hospital site, 246 11th Avenue SE, is located on a grassy, park-like setting near a residential area of Forest Lake. The Lakes International Building Company recently purchased the building from Fairview Health Services.

How many classrooms does the building currently have?

In our first year of operation, we had eight classrooms. For the 2005-2006 school year we opened rooms for additional classes, including the 5th grade and music program. In September 2006 we will opened three additional classrooms, new entry space as well as several new common spaces. In December 2006 we opened our 14 classroom and gymnasium addition. All classrooms are designed and furnished in an age-appropriate manner.

Is there an outdoor play area?

Yes, thanks to our Parent Teacher Organization we have a beautiful outdoor area. Following all state and federal regulations, our play area is a safe and exciting place for children to use large muscle motor functions.

Is the building safe?

All school districts must comply with a complex variety of laws and regulations from federal, state and local agencies. Lakes International Language Academy School District #4116 will ensure that our facilities are in full compliance, including guidelines for:

  • Construction materials
  • Plumbing, electric and water utilities
  • Outdoor spaces
  • Parking, walkways, doors, windows, ceiling heights and other structural dimensions
  • Air quality, heat supply and banned cigarette smoking

Who are the other tenants in the building?

When Lakes International students start classes in September 2006 there will be one tenant, North Medical Transportation Services (EMT/ambulance service), leasing space in the school. Fairview Recovery Services, with whom we shared space in our first two academic years relocated to another site in August 2006.

What events should I know about?

Bienvenidos Conferences

  • Bienvendios Conferences - Specific times for parents and children to meet with their teachers will be assigned; please let us know if you need a different time slot.

What are the hours of the school day?

Our schedule is similar to the hours of the Montessori and St. Peter’s Elementary School, approximately 7:50 – 2:15.

What is the school calendar?

The school calendar is similar to Forest Lake Area ISD #831 for students. The first day of school is Tuesday, September 4, 2007. Specific teacher work days and other days when no classes are scheduled are shown on our academic calendar, which can be found on the "News & Events" page of the website.

How does immersion work? Does it work for everyone?

We’re fortunate that several national resources for immersion and charter school research are located here in Minnesota. We highly recommend that you check out these Web sites:

Is there a Spanish-language summer camp for kids?

Yes, Lakes International is offering Camp del Sol in the summer. Camp del Sol provides a wonderful opportunity for new students to ease into language immersion, and gives returning students a chance to brush up on their Spanish before returning to class!

Children can attend Camp del sol for three hours per day, for one week. You choose which of two weeks fits your family’s summer schedule. We offer a morning session and an afternoon session both weeks (contingent on demand). Included in the registration fee is a daily snack.

How will the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB PYP) be implemented?

Teacher input is a core value of Lakes International. This proven curriculum involves a comprehensive and ongoing training component for teachers. The teachers and director shape the entire program, grade by grade, to meet the Minnesota and federal requirements as well as the standards established by the IB PYP. Visit the IB PYP website for more information: http://www.ibo.org.

What about computers?

Technology is an integral part of a contemporary education. Our Apple laptop wireless computing environment supplements instruction and teaching in K through 6.

What standardized test programs does Lakes International participate in?

As a charter public school, Lakes International must meet the same requirements as all public schools in the state as well as additional requirements particular to charter schools. This means we administer state tests for core subject areas, including reading, writing and math, just as you would expect in any of the public schools. We also test for proficiency in Spanish.

Do you offer Special Ed services? How will they work?

Like all Minnesota public schools, Lakes International offers services to students that qualify for Special Ed. We contract with a Special Ed instructor on an as-needed basis, in compliance with Minnesota law.

Does Lakes International offer a Gifted and Talented (G&T) program?

Our aim is to keep class sizes down so that we can give all children the attention they need. In addition, the IB PYP curriculum fosters differentiation and encourages accelerated learning opportunities that adapt well to G&T students. (In fact, some schools in Canada have chosen the IB PYP for this very reason.) The Spanish-immersion component provides a highly engaging facet for all students. We have assembled a highly capable group of teachers that will place a high priority on developing appropriate instruction approaches for their students.

Who are the teachers and how are they selected?

The staff directory provides a biographical sketch of each of our staff members. Some of the criteria used to select Lakes International staff include:

  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish
  • Enthusiasm for creative teaching opportunities
  • Global awareness and appreciation for global perspectives
  • Willingness to participate in the rigorous IB PYP training process
  • Genuine caring attitude toward children and their education
  • Responsiveness toward parents who value education

Will I receive regular communication from my child’s teacher?

Starting with the first week of school, you should receive a weekly newsletter from your child’s teacher, concerning classroom schedules and activities. We also encourage an open flow of communication between teacher and parent, such as e-mail, phone conversations or classroom meetings. Parent-teacher conferences will also be scheduled during the school year.

How many children are in my child’s class?

Small class sizes are one of our charter objectives. Currently, our target limits for classes are as follows:

  • Kindergarten 2007 - estimated 18-20 per class (6 sections of kindergarten students)
  • 1st Grade - estimated 23 per class
  • 2nd Grade – estimated 23 per class
  • 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Grade – estimated 23 per class

The nature of immersion education makes it difficult for new students to enter the program in later years, say 3rd or 4th grade. Their classmates will be speaking Spanish with considerable proficiency by then; the new students must play catch-up. So, immersion classes rarely increase in pupils once a group starts. For this reason, immersion schools often plan for limited attrition—students moving away or leaving the school—by allowing a slight bump up in enrollment in the early grades.

How can I prepare my child for school?

Tell your child why you’re so excited that s/he will be attending this school. Meet other families and join the PTO. Children adapt amazingly well to new environments (even the ones who start out rather skeptical)!

What is an “bienvenidos conference?”

For families, this conference gives parents and students a chance to meet individually with the child’s teacher, get an overview of the curriculum, ask questions, and tell the teacher a little about the child and family. This meeting time will allow the child to meet his/her teacher, thereby removing a large “unknown.” For the school, the bienvenidos conference is a chance to get to know the student, open the lines of communication, let parents know how they can help their children, suggest how parents can help the teacher and school to benefit their children, and describe what events they can expect through the year. These conferences, common at charter and immersion schools, also give Mr. Hedlund a better idea of the numbers of families that are firmly committed to having their children attend Lakes International. Children whose families do not attend a bienvenidos conference without contacting the school will be removed from the enrollment roster and replaced by children on the waiting list.

Where are bienvenidos conferences held?

Bienvenidos conferences are held at the school, located at 246 11th Avenue SE in Forest Lake.

Who needs to attend bienvendios conferences?

At least one parent/guardian must attend the conference with the child. Both parents are strongly encouraged to attend.

Children whose families do not attend a bienvenidos conference without contacting the school will be removed from the enrollment roster and replaced by children on the waiting list.

Is there a hot lunch program?

Yes, hot lunch is available. We contract food services from Forest Lake School District #831.

Is there a nurse at the school?

We work with a licensed school nurse on a consultant basis to ensure our procedures follow state safety guidelines. We lso have someone designated as a health aide onsite who is trained in First Aid and CPR.

Has Lakes International considered uniforms?

Yes, however, the Board of Directors has decided against a school uniform policy.

A parent survey in the Spring of 2006, which yielded a low response rate, demonstrated many parents were indifferent on the subject. Of those who responded to the survey, an overwhelming majority expressed uncertainty regarding whether they would remove their children from Lakes International if uniforms became standard.

Board members were not prepared to support a major policy shift regarding school dress code at this time, especially at the risk of losing students already progressing in the Spanish program. Many members commented that they also felt strongly that school uniforms were incongruous with the overall mission and vision of the school in combination with the PYP program.

How does busing work?

Lakes International Students are picked up and dropped off on the same route with the junior/senior high school students, along with the children attending St. Peter’s and the public Montessori school. A shuttle from the junior high school brings students to Lakes International, and delivers them back to the senior high school in the afternoon. This is not a new idea—St. Peter’s Elementary School has successfully contracted busing service with Forest Lake ISD #831 for more than thirty years.

We submitted an enrollment form. When do you need to know for sure if our child will attend Lakes International?

We are very pleased that you have shown interest in Spanish immersion and filled out enrollment materials. Perhaps you filled out registration materials to hold a slot for your child, even before you were firmly committed. We ask that you now make a decision. If you decide not to enroll your child at Lakes International, please let us know immediately so we may confirm another student for this fall.

We received a confirmation notice that our child is enrolled. Our friends in other parts of the Metro say we’re lucky—are we?

We’re all lucky that Lakes International has opened in the north Metro in time for our children to attend. This charter school was inspired and developed by parents; all of the current board members plan to enroll their children in the school (we’re subject to the same waiting lists as you are, of course). We hope for many of the same things you do for your children. We’re doing our best to create an exceptional learning environment for your children and ours. We expect that this commitment to education will generate more and more enrollment applications, just as other immersion schools have experienced. All immersion schools in the Metro area have waiting lists to get in. Highland Park in St. Paul, currently the only authorized IB PYP school in the Midwest, is now experiencing a flood of interest, too. Your family was in the right place at the right time to enroll your child in a public school that offers both Spanish immersion and the IB PYP curriculum—without tuition!

Which days will my child go to kindergarten?

Most of our students will be riding Forest Lake school buses. This means that we will be following the Forest Lake Area School District #831 calendar, including the all-day-every-other-day schedule for kindergarten. Kindergarten students will attend Monday, Wednesday and every other Friday or Tuesday, Thursday and every other Friday.

Is there an all-day-every-day kindergarten option?

Although we are currently unable to provide a tuition-free all-day-every-day option, in the Fall of 2007 we are offering Amiguitos. This is a fee-based program which runs alternate to Kindergarten days. Contact the main office at 651.464.0771 for enrollment information.

Do you accept early entry kindergarten students?

Like the Forest Lake Area School District, we accept early entrants under certain circumstances. For example, an early entrant must pass a readiness test, which is paid for by you. Mr. Hedlund, the school director, will make the final decision on a case-by-case basis.

Can I hold my child back a grade, to repeat the grade at Lakes International?

Although it’s possible to hold a child back a grade, Mr. Hedlund prefers to review each request individually. Lakes International will retain a student at a particular grade level only after a meeting with you and the previous school to determine the educational appropriateness of such an action.

What grades does Lakes International offer?

LILA, an independent public charter school, opened just three years ago with 177 students in grades K-4. A fifth grade was added for 2005-06 and enrollment increased to 283. Going forward, the school offers Kindergarten through sixth grade and enrollment is projected to eventually hit at or about 550-the size of a typical Minnesota K-6 public school.

What kinds of volunteer opportunities do parents have at the school?

Volunteer opportunities are many and varied, from helping classroom teachers both in class and behind the scenes, to participating in various school-wide committees, to getting fully "immersed" in school life by joining the PTO.

Is the PTO a good group to join?

Yes! Joining the PTO gives parents a more direct voice in what happens at the school. The PTO provides services that enhance your child’s education. You will enjoy interacting with kids, working with other parents and accomplishing things that make a difference. The PTO meets on the second Tuesday of the month.

Why is the PTO asking parents for money?

The PTO is currently raising money for our language ambassador program as well as for additional playground equipment.

Who are language ambassadors?

Language ambassadors usually come from Spanish-speaking countries to assist U.S. foreign language teachers and introduce students to a truly native voice. These individual are typically undergraduates, student teachers, and even trained teachers in their own countries. Language ambassadors are common in other immersion programs and are usually funded by the PTO. Click here for more information.
